History of Van Mats

Van mats have effectively become a known and used accessory following the introduction of vans. These have effectively been an extension of the concept of cars, designed to transport more bulky items without need for repetitive journeys. Further, they have been of great benefit to a number of industries from general tradesmen right the way to removalists. And in essence the concept of van mats has also followed on from the introduction of wooden flooring areas in the 19th Century for cars as a removable product.

The main concept behind mats at this time was effectively to protect the centre areas most proned to wear and tear due to pressure applied by the driver's feet whislt driving. The next innovation was that this central protection system then spread across to the pedals and from the door to the hand brake area to offer greater levels of protection.

In 1919 tthe concept of car and van mats then progressed to be more focused upon the underbody with cardboard matting being more prevalent as a moisture deterrent mechanism; and improved upon continually for the next 60 years. Its main purpose for innovation was derived from the practicalities for engineers during vehicle inspection and servicing. 1955 marked the next milestone of moulding of floor mats, which were spearheaded by american entrepreneurs who took this development from conceptual stages right through to mass production. Advances came upon these initial offerings with integral areas designed for protection and the draining of fluids and split liquids.

Single piece mats then became a key stage in the mid-1960's and 70s which was the inspiration of America unsurprisingly. It then underwent changes in concept incuding the ability to cut to fit or to trim the mats which were initially universal in nature. The last but not least focus was that on deep dish floor mats that became popular by 1980.

Van mats have been continually evolving to improve upon past technologies. Unlike conventional trucks, there exists a great degree of difference between the types of mats that are offered for the two. The main matter is that of noise reduction. As trucks serve the purpose of regular long haul activities, carrying a significant level of cargo and travelling across various countries and borders, it is a legislative requirement that mats for such trucks should conform with noise reduction guidelines in order to benefit the drivers. Hence, due to the composition of such types of mats, their effective compounds and materials used differ very greatly upon those used for vans and smaller commercial vehicles.

Sound proofing is not a prerequisite or consideration even for the OEM vehicle manufacturers. In fact their requirements for such van mats is more aligned with that of passenger vehicles in terms of design and engineering.

However the vast difference between the two revolves primarily upon dimensions and proportions, as vans generally are better suited to a full one piece floor mat to offer protection across the whole front driver and passenger regions.

Textile One Piece Van Mats

On the whole, due to the nature of their purposes for trade, vans generally find themselves better equipped with heavy duty van mats. That said, OEM's still do offer textile or tufted carpet van mats as an alternative accessory through their dealerships.

There are still many forms of business such as private multi seater taxis and light commercial transportation fields where carpet is still a suitable and prehaps more viable option than their more rugged counterparts.

Whilst not mandatory, often van mats have an integral raised heel pad area on the driver side area; but more of a general expectation is that the mats should have a form of fixation system to ensure that the one piece floor mat remains in position without any adverse effect upon driver performance and overall road holding.

As a one piece product, the carpet would in most cases cover the central tunnel area around the gear stick and handbrake should there be more than two passengers for overall coverage and a greater level of interior protection across the front of the van.
